Zohran Mamdani Uses Historic Quran While Taking Oath
Mamdani explained that the manuscript once belonged to Arturo Schomburg, a Puerto Rican-born Black intellectual and avid book collector, who in 1926 sold his library of 4,000 volumes to the New York Public Library.
“This manuscript was copied in Ottoman Syria, and is written in black ink with red highlighting the text's divisions - no ornate decoration, it belonged to the everyday reader, and it now belongs to all New Yorkers as part of our City's next chapter,” he said.
He emphasized that residents will be able to view the manuscript at the main branch of the New York Public Library, which reopened its doors on Wednesday.
The library noted that Schomburg co-founded Las Dos Antillas, a revolutionary anti-colonial movement that championed independence for Cuba and Puerto Rico.
“This specific Qur’an, which Arturo Schomburg preserved for the knowledge and enjoyment of all New Yorkers, symbolizes a greater story of inclusion, representation, and civic-mindedness,” stated Anthony W. Marx, the library’s president and CEO.
Mamdani was formally sworn in as the 112th mayor of New York City last Thursday during a public ceremony at City Hall. His inauguration marked history as he became the first Muslim and South Asian to lead the nation’s largest city, taking his oath on the Quran.
